Official Announcement The Postal Service will issue a 20-cent George Washington definitive stamp in a booklet of 10 (Item Number 666700); in a vending booklet (Item Number 666900); and in a criss-cross vending booklet of 10 (Item Number 666911) in Wall, SD 57790, on February 22, 2001. The stamp, designed and illustrated by Richard Sheaff of Scottsdale, AZ, goes on sale nationwide February 23, 2001.

The stamp art is based on a black-and-white photograph of a bust of George Washington by Jean-Antoine Houdon. The bust - which is signed and dated 1785 - is on display at George Washington's Mount Vernon estate in Virginia.

Varieties This vending booklet has been found with different horizontal die cuts.  Booklets can have either 11.2 die cuts in both columns, or 10.5 and 11.2 in either the left or right column.  No booklets have been found with 10.5 in both columns.  The vertical die cuts are all 11.2.
Note Vending booklets are shipped to post offices packed in two different configurations.
Offices with Multi-Commodity Vending Machines receive their booklets packed in a box with 2 rows totaling 450 booklets.
Offices with dedicated booklet vending machines receive the criss-cross style booklets, packed 300 to a box. Each booklet in the stack is turned 90° from the one above or below.
There is no physical difference in the appearance of the booklets.
Differences between the Convertible book and the Vending book. The stamp side of the vending and convertible booklets show minor differences.

The peel off strip has been removed from the vending book and many books have a cutting nick at the die cut fold line, either left or right.  On the vending book, the horizontal die cuts at the junction where they intersect the vertical die cuts start at the top and go to the bottom, forming a Peak-Valley (PV) configuration. On the convertible book, it is the opposite, forming a Valley-Peak (V-P) configuration

On the cover side, there is no apparent difference.
The stamps appear to be identical on both formats.
